Welcome

Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings during school term, 7:30-9:30pm
Rehearsals for Edward Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius started on Monday 7th January 2008
We are based in Thame, Oxfordshire, with long established links to Lord Williams's School. We are, above all, a friendly choir, which gladly welcomes new members. We have a secure local base and we are looking forward to an interesting and challenging future. Our numbers are growing (100 plus now) but we always welcome new faces and voices. You do not need to audition to join us but we do ask that you share our enthusiasm for choral music and its performance.
We are very pleased to announce that Howard Goodall has agreed to become our Patron. Howard's exceptional musical pedigree is well known but you may not know that he is a past pupil at Lord Williams's School. Howard is helping the School with forthcoming celebrations of a very important anniversary and we look forward to joining in the fun.
We are directed by John Gibbons, who is an internationally-renowned freelance conductor and lives locally. He is a superb musician and teacher who inspires us all. Together we strive to achieve excellence, but with enjoyment!. During 2007 the Chorus has increased in size, stature and confidence under John’s inspired direction.
This autumn we performed The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins for our December concert to a packed house at Thame Leisure Centre. This moving Mass for Peace, dedicated by Karl to the victims of Kosovo, was commissioned by the Royal Armouries to commemorate the millennium. A highlight of the performance was the enthusiastic contribution of members of Lord Williams’s School in the percussion section. Following our December performance members of the Chorus performed the piece as part of an international choir conducted by Jonathan Griffiths and watched by Karl Jenkins in New York’s Carnegie Hall on 21st January 2008.
For the December concert we were joined by Ealing Symphony Orchestra who gave a stunning rendition of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor in which Nicola Benedetti gave an enthralling virtuoso solo performance. All who were privileged to witness this will never forget the unbelievable beauty and fluency of Nicola’s interpretation of the complex and demanding work. Nicola will be performing the Sibelius Concerto with the Vienna Tonkunstler Symphony Orchestra during her European Tour which starts in Vienna on 2nd February 2008 and includes dates in Birmingham, Leeds, London and Manchester.
At Christmas this year we again supported the Restoration Fund of St Mary’s Church in Long Crendon by performing a carol concert in the church on December 22nd. Our first concert for the appeal last year raised over £600.
For our Spring Concert on April 26th we are performing the Dream of Gerontius by Edward Elgar. This inspiring work demands the full resources of a large skilled choir and we are looking forward to the challenge! We have welcomed many new members this term and our doors are open to all who wish to join for the next concert – it is not too late.
